This opening Session premieres our Nurses’ Voices Speaker Series—an innovative global multi-media outreach of eight Sessions to be broadcasted from across the world. Noting that INFLUENCE is the watchword of Dr. Pamela Cipriano—the 2021-2025 President of the International Council of Nurses (ICN), she is the first Speaker featured in this recording below. This Series aims to prepare and engage nurses—including students and retirees—to become inspired and informative thought-leaders across the global public space—to influence the listening ears of everyone!
Session One of this Series was broadcasted virtually on October 24, 2023—United Nations Day—and Co-Hosted by the United Nations Institute for Training & Research (UNITAR), UNITAR's CIFAL York Centre for training at York University in Toronto, Canada, and the Nightingale Initiative for Global Health (NIGH). Speakers’ Bios
SPEAKERS
Pamela F. Cipriano, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN Speaking at minute 7:11
Dr. Cipriano, is the current President of the International Council of Nurses (ICN). Prior to this appointment, she served two terms as the President of the American Nurses Association. She also serves as Professor at the University of Virginia School of Nursing (UVA) and Batten School of Leadership & Public Policy. She has extensive experience as an academic medical center executive and her career is marked by a focus on improving the quality and safety of services and the work environment for all staff. Her advocacy for the nursing profession is well-recognized. Her recent work with the National Academy of Medicine’s Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being & Resilience focuses on psychological safety and support for caregivers experiencing stress, and burnout, across the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. She is also known nationally and internationally as a strong advocate for growing nursing’s influence on health care policy, and leading efforts to advance the role and visibility of nurses. As Emerita Dean of the UVA's School of Nursing, she was ranked #2 on Healthcare Global’s list of the Top 10 Women in Healthcare for 2021.
Gloria Chan, DNP, CRNA, MSN, RN, FAAN Speaking at minute 23:51
Dr. Chan is the current Vice President of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) the Honorary Society of Nurses representing over 135,000 nurses in over 590 chapters across 90 countries. She also serves as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Graduate Nursing at Hofstra University. She was most recently named an American Academy of Nursing 2023 Fellow —FAAN—for her “substantial, sustained, and outstanding impact on health and health care.” She is Certified Nurse Anesthetist at the Staten Island University Hospital and also a strong proponent of global advocacy. In 2013, she was appointed as the first United Nations DPI-NGO Youth Representative for the Nightingale Initiative for Global Health (NIGH), where she amplified the voices of 27.5 million nurses worldwide and led them to understand the development and implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Kathleen McCourt, CBE Speaking at minute 36:40
Profession McCourt serves as President of the Commonwealth Nurses & Midwives Federation. On Queen Elizabeth's Birthday Honours List, 2012, Professor McCourt was awarded her CBE—Commander of the Order of the British Empire—as a nurse who has made a significant impact in her respective field. This is considered a high honour, and recipients may use the title "Commander."
She joined the Board of the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals as a Non-Executive Director in December 2015 and has had an extensive career as a nurse, midwife and educationalist in the UK and overseas. She was formerly a Pro-Chancellor and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health & Life Science at Northumbria University. During her career, Professor McCourt has been nominated, elected and represented her employer and the nursing profession in a variety of regional, national and international settings. She has significant Board level experience through chairing committees and groups and has been an advisory consultant to a number of overseas governments and organisations including the World Health Organization (WHO. She is also an Honorary Colonel at the 201 Field Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing.

Ms. Chase serves on the Board of Directors of the Nightingale Initiative for Global Health (NIGH). In July of 2023, she proactively participated in the launch of NIGH's 'Nurses' Voices Grassroots-to-Global' campaign shared virtually and onsite from Switzerland and from the 2023 Caux Forum 'Healing the Wounds of the Past. She has served as an informal advisor to NIGH’s Core Team for more than a decade and will continue to contribute her knowledge and experience to NIGH's growth. She is an American Registered Nurse currently practicing at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. The majority of her career has been in emergency medicine while traveling across the United States where she has noted vast differences and disparities in health care delivery. This observation was further accentuated upon moving to the Middle East where she investigated this subject further by obtaining her Masters in Public Health (MPH) from the University of Liverpool in the UK as she gained insight into public health from an international perspective—recognizing similarities and differences in health outcomes determined by the type of delivery system and location of populations receiving care. She has also achieved a Masters for International Health Leadership (IMHL) at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. Here, she joined a cohort of experienced international participants who shared the common goal of developing innovative solutions to challenge the most complex health care problems. During this program, Ms. Chase traveled to India with her IMHL cohort to study the concept of ‘collaboration’—while visiting many successful organizations demonstrating effective outcomes using mentorship, diversity and inclusion as essential components in their shared processes.

Mr. Ritchie serves on the Board of Directors for the Nightingale Initiative for Global Health (NIGH) and as NIGH's United Nations NGO Representative in Geneva—supporting growing team to bring the voices of nurses and midwives into the global dialogue and the United Nations NGO community—from his decades of experience and leadership. In 2018, Mr. Ritchie was re-elected First Vice-President of CoNGO—the Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations. Prior to this, he served for two terms as President starting in 2011—before serving for 40 years and five separate terms as Secretary of the CoNGO Conference and Board and First Vice President. Mr. Ritchie has participated in many United Nations Summits and World Conferences, including for Food, Environment, Women, Habitat, Nutrition, Social Development Information and for Sustainable Development. He frequently attends United Nations Economic & Social Council Commissions and sessions of other United Nations organs. For the Union of International Associations (UIA), Mr. Ritchie has served as President since 2017 and Vice President between 1998 and 2016. Based in Bruxelles, UIA is the publisher of the Yearbook of International Organizations, and of the International Conference Calendar. Mr. Ritchie has also served as President of the 2006 International Civil Society Forum for Democracy, held in Doha, Qatar. From 2000 to 2008, he served as President of the Council of Europe INGO Grouping “Civil society and democracy in Europe” and from 2008 to 2018 as President of the Expert Council on NGO Law. He has also served 14 years as Executive Director of the International Council of Voluntary Agencies (ICVA) and was Chair of the 1999 World Civil Society Conference (WOCSOC) in Montreal. From 2008 to 2012, Mr. Ritchie was Chair of the Board of Advisors of the World Future Council, and is now Senior Policy Advisor to the WFC, based in Hamburg. Since 1979, Mr. Ritchie has been named a Titular of the World Order of the Smile.

Dr. Dossey has international recognition as a pioneer in the holistic nursing and nurse coaching movements. She is a Florence Nightingale scholar, nurse theorist, and national and international speaker and teacher on the role of integrative nurse coaching in the emerging integrative healthcare paradigm. She is Co-Founder of the International Nurse Coach Association and the Integrative Nurse Coach Academy (INCA) and Director of Holistic Nursing Consultants in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She also serves as a volunteer International Co-Director and Board Member of the Nightingale Initiative for Global Health (NIGH) where she works to strengthen individual commitment toward achieving a healthy world as a priority objective for action by ordinary citizens, civil society organizations, and governments at the local and national level.

Dr. Beck is a Canadian American nurse, global citizen, and award-winning Nightingale scholar. For 20 years, she has served as a volunteer International Co-Director for the Nightingale Initiative for Global Health—leading workshops, keynotes, webinars, feature articles, multi-media, UN briefings, and to achieve NIGH’s United Nations ECOSOC ‘Special Consultative Status.’ After a 30-year clinical career in Critical Care & Women's Health settings, Dr. Beck received her doctorate in 2002, from the Union Institute, for her groundbreaking research to articulate Florence Nightingale’s relevance to today’s international health, development, education, and media. She has since authored and co-authored articles for numerous peer-reviewed journals and textbook chapters. Meanwhile, Dr. Beck has recently achieved the highest-level education Award from Toastmasters International—as a Distinguished Toast Master ‘DTM’. She now aims to use this ‘credential’ to develop innovative ways to encourage and engage nurses and concerned citizens to share their voices and tell their stories in the global public arena.
