This Session Three is featured from our Nurses’ Voices Speaker Series—an innovative global multi-media outreach of eight Sessions to be broadcasted from across the world. Noting that INFLUENCE is the watchword of Dr. Pam Cipriano—the 2021-2025 President of the International Council of Nurses (ICN)—this Series aims is to prepare and engage nurses—including students and retirees—to become inspired and informative thought-leaders across the global public space—to influence the listening ears of everyone!
Session Three of this Series was broadcasted virtually on January 9th, 2024 and co-hosted by the United Nations Institute for Training & Research (UNITAR), UNITAR's CIFAL York Centre for training at York University in Toronto, Canada, and the Nightingale Initiative for Global Health (NIGH)--featuring leading nurses' voices from Angola, Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda & South Africa. Their voices provide a powerful blueprint for Africa's dynamic nursing future.

Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, MPH, RN, FWACN, FGCNM Starting at minute 3:01 and throughout the Session
Ms. Ofori-Ampofo is the President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association and has over fifteen years related experience in Trade Unionism. She is the current Chairperson of the West African Health Sector Unions Network (WAHSUN) of Public Services International (PSI) and the Chairperson of the Ghana PSI National Coordinating Council. She is a Nurse Educator with over twenty years of experience in the health sector of Ghana as a nurse. She holds a Master of Public Health and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Nursing with Psychology from the University of Ghana, Legon, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Education from the University of Cape Coast. She is also a certified Pension’s Trustee licensed by the National Pensions Regulatory Authority of Ghana. She has been awarded as a Foundation Fellow of the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives and as a Fellow of the West African College of Nurses and Midwives. She serves on several national and international committees and Boards including the Governing Board of the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Ghana, the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives, the Health Sector Occupational Pension Scheme, the PSI Health and Social Sector Task Force and ITUC-Africa Occupational Health and Safety Network.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Professor Sheila Tlou, PhD, MA, RN Starting at minute 10:20
Professor Tlou is a nurse, HIV prevention advocate and Botswana’s former Minister of Health who has used her talents — as a leader in health policy — to make a lasting change in the health of populations in Eastern and Southern Africa. Of her many accomplishments — which have included being a Member of Parliament for the Republic of Botswana, and Director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Nursing and Midwifery Development in Primary Health Care for Anglophone Africa. She says that she is most proud of her work to save the lives of children and their mothers by significantly lowering rates of HIV transmission in communities in Botswana. Within four years of implementing community-engaged approaches, her efforts successfully reduced the rate of mother-to-child transmission of HIV from 30% in 2003 to 8 %. After completing her Master’s Degree in Nursing Education & Instruction from Columbia University, she returned to Botswana to teach community health nursing and she also co-directed a travelling theatre that performed plays to impart health-focused messages about family planning and spacing pregnancies. She earned her PhD in Community Health Nursing and a Diploma in Gender Issues, at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Though technically retired, she continues to work actively in health promotion strategy consulting with the African Union, the United Nations and the World Health Organization on reducing deaths from malaria, in addition to her work on the prevention of HIV/AIDs.

Andre Gitembagara, RN Starting at minute 27:20
Mr. Gitembagara has recently been elected to the International Council of Nurses Board representing Africa Region in a virtual event by ICN’s governing body. He also serves on ICN’s Council of National Nursing Association Representatives (CNR) and as President of the Rwanda Nurses & Midwives Union. Andre is a professional nurse with over 21 years of career experience; from practice to leadership, research, policy formulation and nurses’ organizations, including the Rwanda National Council of Nurses and Midwives and Rwanda Nurses and Midwives Union. He previously served as a Director of Nursing at the Hospital level, Board Member of the National Council of Nurses and Midwives for the last 10 years and is the current President of Rwanda Nurses and Midwives Union since 2013. As a trusted nurse leader, Andre has led or participated in drafting and validation of many nursing/midwifery and health policies at National and African regional levels.
Edna Tallam-Kimaiyo, PhD, MPH, BScN Starting at minute 35:08
Dr. Tallam-Kimaiyo is an experienced health professional with excellent leadership, management experience and sound knowledge and skills in policy and regulatory affairs within the sector. She is a Certified Global Nurse Consultant in Policy and Leadership and the Registrar/ Chief Executive Officer of the Nursing Council of Kenya. Her rich and vast experience has inspired her to lead nurses and midwives toward building health systems and enhance her leadership capacity for promoting progressive healthcare policies and implementation. She is currently supporting ICN and the Organizational Development of the National Nursing Association (ODENNA) as a Nursing Expert locally and regionally in implementing ODENNA initiatives in the African region. Her interests are in Strategic Leadership, Reproductive Health, Public Health, Change Management, Organization design, development & implementation, Performance management, Workforce planning, and Health expert Consultancy services. She holds a PhD. in Nursing Education from the University of Stellenbosch, a Master’s Degree in Public Health, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She is a Fellow of the Afyabora Global Health leadership programme. She graduated in 2018 from the Global Nursing Leadership Institute (GNLI)™ Programme and has been a facilitator for the AFRO Region from 2020-2023 and a cross-regional facilitator.
Fhumulani Mavis Mulaudzi, PhD, RN Starting at minute 42:35
Dr. Mulaudzi is the South African Research Chair in the Ubuntu Community Model in Nursing and Professor of Nursing at the University of Pretoria Department of Nursing Science with 37 years of professional experience. She has served Head of the Department of Nursing and Chair of the School of Health Care Sciences, also serving many national and global leadership positions, including Chairperson of the Forum for University Nursing Deans in South Africa, African Regional Coordinator of Sigma Theta Tau International, and as a founding member of the Academy of Science Nursing in South Africa. She has also served as a Deputy Chairperson for the Bamboo Bridge International. an organisation that promotes traditional healing and other methods of care. She was an awarded runner-up for the Distinguished Women in Science Award in 2011 for her work in indigenous knowledge system research. She is currently Editor-in-Chief of the Curationis Nursing Journal and the Deputy President of the Democratic Nursing Organization of South Africa (DENOSA). Recently, she was recognised as a “Champion of Research Capacity Development and Transformation” at the 2023 National Research Foundation Awards, South Africa’s most prestigious academic achievements.
Kenneth Maduka, RN, CFMN Starting at minute 50:31
Mr. Maduka is originally from Nigeria and a Board Certified Nurse Midwife Practitioner by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria with over 7yrs of experience in clinical practice; he studied nursing at College of Nursing Iyi-Enu and midwifery as a specialty program at School of Midwifery Iyi-Enu, obtaining a Diploma in Nursing and in Midwifery with an Outstanding Performance and has completed his clinical training at Iyi-Enu Mission Hospital. His Nursing degree with Ahmadu Bello University Zaria (In View)
He is also Functional Medical Nurse Practitioner, having received this certification from the Institute of Functional Medicine/Integrative Nurse Coach Academy affiliated with the International Nurse Coach Association (INCA). He cites that this approach to health care assists with a focus on wellness programs best suited to each individual. ; He has also received extensive training in a wide range of therapeutic modalities, including as a Certified I.V Nutrition Therapist, Men’s’ Health & Chelation Therapist, Bio-Identical Hormone Therapist and more by the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, Certified Alzheimer's Diseases Instructor, Certified in BLS, ACLS, and PALS; U.S.A. He is a trained Oxygen- Ozone Therapist in Wound care Management. He is an active member of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. Mr. Maduka serves in private practice focused on the care of medically ill children, adolescents, and pregnant women. His treatment areas include preventive, curative, supportive and integrative natural therapies for chronic diseases including diabetes, infertility, cancers, and pain relief. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family, reading, running and playing musical instruments.

Ms. Ngambir is a Nursing Leader serving in Quality Management & Health Safety and Environment Field Hospitals, affiliated with Clínica Girassol in Luanda Province, Angola. She is also Manager & Professor at Universidade Agostinho Neto (Univeristy of Angola) Institute for Health Sciences. She achieved her Masters in Public Health at Queens University Belfast in the UK.
