Nightingale & Friends Encircling The Globe
Words & Works of Healing and Compassion
Words & Works of Healing and Compassion
This project began online — as "e-Postcards to You from Florence Nightingale" — during the Centennial of Nightingale's death — also the 2010 International Year of the Nurse — and featured on NIGH's original homepage @ www.NightingaleDeclaration.net — from 2011 to 2015.
These 'e-Postcards' feature national stamps — some shown here on the left — depicting Nightingale's continuing heritage around the world. The stamps are paired with her inclusive words of wisdom — with her |
own signature mounted on antique 'paper' backgrounds — then posted on this video:
This video was created—in 2011—to highlight Nightingale's wide appeal with nurses and midwives across the entire Muslim world and for submission to an 'Inter-faith' section of the contest 'Muslima: Muslim Women's Art & Voices' at the International Museum of Women.
Nightingale was an exemplary woman — an awesome connector of people from many disciplines and cultures. During her famous nursing service in Constantinople, Turkey — during the Crimean War — Nightingale was a close friend of Sultan Abdulmecid — then a political and spiritual head of Islam.
Because her own deep faith was remarkably universal — what we would today call 'inter-faith' — her insights remain a timeless legacy for us, today. While many of her included quotes are related to 'nursing' — Nightingale saw 'nursing' as a caring and committed standard for all women, and indeed, also for all men.
With NIGH, we envision the potential for women and girls of all faiths to be and become Nightingale's 'Friends' — who encircle our globe with the healing and compassion needed to achieve a healthy world.
This video's music track — from Rimski-Korsakov's 'Scheherezade' — uses a poignant violin solo to depict the voice of a courageous woman who told stories of 'Arabian Nights' to make a difference in the consciousness of a leader in her time.
The background soundtrack was accessed from the 'Community Audio' of Archives.org and used with a 'Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0' license. The original recording is dated 1934, from the Philadelphia Orchestra, Leopold Stokowski, Conductor, under the Victor label.
The stamps used in the graphic above — and in this video production — have been accessed online and are in the public domain. The antique 'paper' background images are also either in public domain or used with Attribution-Share Alike license.
The pearl necklace featured in this video was sourced from Wikimedia Commons with 'UWAKOYA' as the uploading 'Author' — used with the 'Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license.'
