NIGH Advisory Council
Dr. Goodman’s current focus is Global Nursing Expertise. She began the first study abroad program for nursing students at Florida Atlantic University. These programs served several purposes.
• They provided much needed primary care and cervical cancer screenings to an underserved population of indigenous Maya people in rural mountainous communities. • They provided a rich cultural immersion for the students who were able to translate what they learned about the Guatemala Maya culture to the large Guatemalan immigrant population we have in South Florida. They learned a great deal about Transcultural Caring Science, cultural humility and competency. |
• The nurse practitioner students earned 40 hours of clinical practicum under the supervision of their faculty clinical instructors and licensed Guatemalan physician preceptors. The BSN students earned 100 volunteer hours in their program. Nursing Education majors earned 100 practicum hours while teaching and supervising the BSN students. DNP students and PhD students conducted research, quality assurance, and program assessments.
• The students gained clinical experience unlike anything they would experience in the United States.
• The program has provided a rich ground for research. She has conducted three research studies in Guatemala, published two papers and has taken over 35 groups to Guatemala and one group to Ecuador. This work will continue even though she has retired.
Description of This Global Work
Nurse Practitioner students earned 40 hours of clinical practicum by providing clinics in rural Guatemala. We have over 13,000 documented patient visits in the indigenous Maya population. We assess, diagnose, and provide medications for all ages throughout the continuum of life. In addition, the NP students learn how to screen for cervical cancer using a single visit approach called VIA-CRYO. My partners were three NGOs in Guatemala.
BSN students conduct wellness screenings on school aged children. They measure height, weight, assess nutritional status, assess heart and lung sounds, inspect for skin infections, teach dental hygiene, paint the teeth with dental fluoride, and administer de-worming medication.
BSN students also provide foot clinics for older adults who have diabetes and/or hypertension. They wash and inspect the feet, palpate pulses, check for neuropathy, assess for lesions and infections, and also measure blood pressure and blood sugar. BSN students raise money to donate 12 wood stoves to families on each trip and install these stoves with the families, conducting a home health assessment during the process.
D.r Goodman has also raised the money for and participated in the building of the following projects:
• A three-room middle school with a computer lab (with 15 computers) and bathrooms with sinks, running water, and flush toilets
• Over 300 wood stoves for families
• Two new commercial sized wood stoves for a facility housing older, abandoned adults
• A full kitchen building with four wood stoves and a refrigerator for a primary school
• Two all-purpose buildings for two rural communities
• Two comprehensive playgrounds with beautiful equipment for two primary schools
In addition, she has donated thousands of toothbrushes and tubes of toothpaste, Christmas stockings and small gifts for many school children and has replicated this work in Ecuador, partnering with the university in Manabi.
