NIGH's History: Part 3 — 2012 to 2018 — Advocacy
to Reach Goals for Sustainable Development
to Reach Goals for Sustainable Development
“The Sustainable Development Goals are as meaningful in Canada as they are everywhere else in the world. We are committed to implementing them at home while we also work with our international partners to achieve them around the world.”

Now in our second decade, we continue NIGH's service to share the stories of achieving global health — and the factors determining health. To these ends, we are directly focused on advocacy to reach the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 — with creative and innovative strategies. |

We began this timeline of work in 2012 — focusing on UN MDG # 5 — ‘Improve Maternal Health’— a 'Global Goal' that remains crucial to human prospering and human civilization — now embedded in SDG # 3 'Health & Well-Being as its priority Target # 3.1. Within 24 months, NIGH's 'Daring, Caring & Sharing to Save Mothers' Lives' public awareness campaign achieved 3.5 million hits for this story. Launched in New York City and then online across the world, this webpage was seen by 90,000 unique online visitors from 146 nations. |
Our teams have regularly collaborated through NIGH Representatives at UN NGO International Conferences and by serving two terms on the UN DPI-NGO Executive Committee — including younger leaders serving as UN NGO 'Youth Reps.' All participated in the UN’s ‘Post 2015 Agenda’ campaign — ‘The World We Want’ — to define and determine the new UN SDGs — with an online Global Briefing 'The World Nurses Want' and related workshops and conference presentations.

In 2014, WHO commissioned NIGH World to produce a second video 'At the Heart of It All: Nurses & Midwives for Universal Health Coverage' — SDG # 3 / Target 3.8 — premiered for Jordan’s Princess Muna Al-Hussein at the WHO Global Forum for Chief Nursing & Midwifery Officers in Geneva — featured, since then, at WHO Regional Conferences and WHO Nursing & Midwifery Collaborating Centres worldwide.
|
In 2014, a NIGH World team served as Manitoba media representatives at the 3-day Maternal Health Summit — for UN MDG # 5 ‘Improve Maternal Health’ — convened by Canada in Toronto. In follow-up, the NIGH team wrote articles for Canadian community newspapers — featuring three Summit speakers — then UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, Tanzanian President Jakawa Kitwete and Jordan’s Queen Rania Al Abdullah — and highlighting their specific work for achieving maternal and infant health, particularly in areas of high risk for maternal and neonatal death.
|
NIGH World has also co-sponsored — in 2015, 2016 and 2017 — official ‘Parallel Events’ for the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York In 2017, our Panel Presentations — ‘Innovations to Support the Global Nursing & Midwifery Workforce’ — and related video interviews were recorded for wider distribution to feature the 61st UN CSW Priority Theme: ‘Women's economic empowerment in the changing world of work.’ As well, we celebrated a Gala Reception during the 61st UN CSW — honouring ten Exemplary Nursing Leaders related to this ‘theme’.

From 2015 to 2018, NIGH World representatives again presented — about achieving the SDGs — at several conferences, including: in Geneva (2015), to prepare a 'History of Nursing & Midwifery at WHO'; in Norway (2015), at the Red Cross Nordic United World College; in Yerevan (2015) at the Third International Nursing Conference of Armenia; in London (2016 & 2018) at the Third and Fourth International Conference of Commonwealth Nurses & Midwives Federation; and, in Glasgow (2016), at the International Conference of WHO Collaborating Centres for Nursing & Midwifery.
As well, NIGH World Co-Sponsored an event with leaders from the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO). Their ‘Voices to Achieve the 17 UN SDGs: A Multimedia Advocacy Workshop’ provided nurses, midwives and concerned citizens with leading-edge opportunities to develop their voices — to become ‘citizen journalists and broadcasters.’ This prototype project arises from specific recommendations of the World Health Organization’s Global Strategic Directions to Strengthen Nursing & Midwifery, 2016 to 2020.
To these ends — and toward the fulfillment of Canada’s commitment to achieve the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals both at home and abroad — NIGH World is organizing related briefings with colleagues from across Canada — who are also active in achieving the UN SDGs.
