NIGH's own Dr. Maria ‘Tess’ Theresa Panizales comes ‘Home!’  The West Visayas State University (WVSU) College of Nursing Guidance Office successfully conducted “Competence, Adaptability and Resilience: A Talk for Future Competent Nurses” on April 8, 2026—bringing together student nurses in a shared pursuit of professional growth and readiness. The highlight of the event was the insightful discussion by Maria Theresa P. Panizales, DNP (PHNL), Dr. (H.C.), MSN, RN – who serves on NIGH’s Board of Directors. WVSU is her ‘Home’ Nursing School. Through her talk, “Caring the Nurse in Us,” she shared the grounded in the principles of Integral Nursing by Dr. Barbara Dossey, the discussion emphasized the importance of self-awareness, holistic care, and the interconnectedness between the nurse’s inner self and professional practice. Students were encouraged to engage in active leadership, summarized in the call to “be involved,” and to embrace change and the outcome of your choices, think about all the why's, don't forget humor, and surround yourself with happy people. Dr. Panizales also addressed relevant professional challenges including stress, burnout, compassion fatigue, moral distress, secondary trauma, and organizational factors, linking these to the importance of grit, passion, and perseverance in sustaining competence.

Dr. Acorn’s academic career has evolved from diploma to post-doctoral education. She completed her Doctor of Nurse Practitioner/ Nursing Practice and is dually certified as both a Primary Health Care and Adult Nurse Practitioner. She holds national nursing certifications in Emergency and Gerontology and an international certification as a Global Nurse Consultant. Dr. Acorn was inducted as an inaugural Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Nursing and also inducted into the American Academy of Nursing. Michelle was an inaugural international Miller Foundation Post-Doctoral System Chief Nurse Executive Fellow in the Shaughnessy Nurse Leadership Academy, Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western University. She is also currently a Miller Coldiron Fellow. She has transitioned from government as the Ontario Provincial Chief Nursing Officer to the ICN. Dr. Acorn’s diverse clinical expertise includes practicing in the Emergency, as a Hospitalist, innovating GAIN (Geriatric Assessment and Intervention Networks), and pioneering the most responsible provider (MRP) impacts of a NP–led model of inpatient hospital care and primary care in corrections. She currently practices primary care in the community. career is marked by a focus on improving the quality and safety of services and the work environment for all staff. Cipriano’s advocacy for the nursing profession is well-recognized. Her recent work with the National Academy of Medicine’s Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being and Resilience is focusing on addressing the psychological safety and support for caregivers experiencing stress and burnout, particularly in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. She has also led efforts to reduce the regulatory and workflow burdens of electronic documentation to relieve clinicians of unnecessary work. She is known nationally and internationally as a strong advocate for quality, growing nursing’s influence on health care policy, and leading efforts to advance the role and visibility of nurses. She was ranked Number 2 on Healthcare Global’s list of the Top 10 women in healthcare for 2021. Among her many honors and awards for exceptional leadership and contributions to the profession, she was the Distinguished Nurse Scholar-in-Residence at the Institute of Medicine in 2010-11 and is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, earning its Healthcare Leader Award in 2018.
